Ryan, your opinion is valid but why be so rude? Are you working as a gas marketer?

How embarrassing after a flame like that to know that Terasen is now lowering the price of gas.

Terasen has no markup on the commodity. They make NO profit from selling gas. (Delivering gas is another story)

Whatever, it’s totally irrelevant if one deal is cheaper than the other. What is relevant is the door to door sales tactics are absolutely shocking.

I'm unhappy with the BCUC for allowing these sharks to continue to harass us.

The gas marketers take advantage of the elderly, uneducated and uninformed.

The BCUC enforced code of conduct for gas marketers is not working and the abuse continues. Sadly, those who are taken advantage of are not those who typically speak up.

The BCUC has done as much as can be expected to straighten these companies out. Yet the pressure and manipulation is still prevalent with the majority of these door to door gas marketers.

I'd like to see the end of the pressure, manipulation and fast talking salespeople comming to my house. If consumers want fixed price gas - they can search these companies out easily enough.

Without door to door manipulation and trickery, how many customers would these businesses actually have?

I have had gas marketers come here twice. The first time, the fellow was nice and when I told him I was not interested, he politely told me to have a great evening and left. This time, this evening, the gentleman was pushy and rude. I told him the price of gas in the past five years has not fluctuated enough for me (just look at the historical rates on Terasen's site) to decide to make that change and he basically belittled me. If I HAD been interested, that totally ruined it for me.

In 2007 the BC Utilities Commission opened up price competition of natural gas and allowed 'gas marketers' to actively sell gas door to door with the premise being that they offered a way to guarantee your rate during rising gas prices and protect the rate if prices should fall. They are very misleading, are trained to exploit lack of consumer knowledge and create enough confusion and pressure that many people sign contracts, having no idea what they are signing. The current marketer rate with contracts signed in 2007 is as high as $11.00 per Gigajoule (GJ) while the current variable gas rate in our province is under $5.00.
Many people don't even realize they are paying the higher rate because it is kind of buried in the gas bill. You can check by getting out your gas bill and looking where it says 'Cost of gas' to see what you are paying. If you are on with a marketer they will be listed below this line on the bill and you will be paying more than $5.00 per GJ.
This has nothing to do with the BCUC or our provincial gas company and we have no problem with competition and business practice. Where we have a problem is the sleazy underhanded manner in which these marketers have approached the business. We were caught ourselves and finally after months of phone calls, found a way out. You can too by visiting www.gaswise.info where everything is explained. Please understand we are not interested in any part of your savings, this effort is only being made to help people take back control of their gas prices.
