I just received an offer from Direct Energy to renew my natural gas contract for a whopping 58% increase! If I do not respond to the offer in a timely manner they plan to automatically renew without my consent for a 78% increase, all of this with the approval of the Ontario Energy Board.

Hi Rick, first thing is they can not renew your agreement for another 5 years after your rate expires. When this happens you are paying the market rate, although Direct energy may still appear on your bill, untill you reinrole. The market rate is the average cost your Utility pays for your gas from all gass supplyers. Direct energy is one of these manny companies supling gass to your Utility.
